Alcatraz
A rocky island located in San Francisco Bay where a military prison was established in 1868. In 1934, "The Rock," became a federal penitentiary for the nation s most dangerous criminals. No prisoner is recorded as ever having successfully escaped. Closed in 1963, it became a National Historic Landmark in 1981.
