Island in Europe partitioned in 1921 with the six counties of Northern Ireland staying part of the U.K. The Irish Free State became the Republic of Ireland in 1949. The division was the cause of much continuing violent conflict, known as "The Troubles." Pubs, booze, jigs, music, literature, religion, and blarney.
