Frank Galvin (Newman) is an alcoholic failed attorney reduced to ambulance chasing. A friend gives him a supposedly easy malpractice case that pits Frank against a powerful establishment Catholic hospital in Boston in what turns out to be a last chance at redeeming himself and his career. Adapted from the novel by Barry Reed. One of Newman's finest performances.
