Controversial funnyman Brand takes over the title role that Dudley Moore made famous in 1981. Arthur Bach is the punch-drunk zillionaire content with partying and always picking up the check. However, his controlling mother informs him that he'll be marrying rich young woman Susan (Garner) and finding a job to maintain the inheritance. All this just as he meets working girl Naomi (Gerwig), a woman with soul. Mirren puts more muscle into the part of the playboy's caretaker, previously filled by Arthur's aloof brother. A fairly faithful adaptation, with Brand never going over-the-top or doing a Moore impression.
