Necessarily compacted adaptation of Mordecai Richler's dense 1997 satire/memoir. It follows 40 years in the life of curmudgeonly, triple-married and divorced Montreal Jew Barney Panofsky (Gimatti) and his various excesses, which could include murder. Not a sympathetic character, Barney is self-involved and obsessive, particularly with near-saintly third wife Miriam (Pike). Also watch the close relationship between Barney and his sly cop father, Izzy (well-played by Hoffmann).
