Martin Schulz (Lukas) and Max Eisenstein (Carnovsky) are German immigrants working as art dealers in San Francisco. Their long friendship tears apart when Martin returns to Germany and is swayed by Nazi propaganda, which causes a series of family tragedies. The title isn't explained until the end of the movie.
