Thinly veiled autobiographical debut of writer/director/star Lena Dunham, who filmed many of the scenes in her parents' Tribeca apartment. She plays post-college grad film student Aura, who returns to her family in New York while trying to emerge from their shadow. Her successful photo artist mother (Simmons) and award-winning poet sister (Grace Dunham) take turns supporting her and tearing her down as she deals with dead end jobs and deadbeat boyfriends. Helping convey the complexity of the relationship is the fact that the two supporting actresses actually are her mother and sister. Although it's not laugh-out-loud funny, the self-deprecating wit of Dunham is very appealing.
