Working class Miriam Brady (Davis) takes pity on attorney and society guy Geoffrey Sherwood (Hunter) when he gets drunk after seeing his ex-girlfriend Valentine (Alexander) marry wealthier John Marland (Clive). On an impulse, Miriam marries Geoff and then tries to educate herself on how to behave in his world. However, he keeps returning to the booze and there's trouble when Valentine deserts her hubby because she wants Geoff back. Miriam decides she's not going to get him.
