Tabloid newspaper editor Joseph Randall (Robinson) is pressured by his publisher (Apfel) to come up with a sensational story to increase readership and revenue. Randall assigns slimy reporter Isopod (Karloff) to do a follow-up to a 20-year-old murder and the subsequent expose leads to multiple tragedies that finally reawaken Randall's conscience. Title refers to the last newspaper edition of the day. Some of the acting seems stilted but Karloff is repulsively watchable and Robinson gets a bravura speech. Based on the play by former tabloid newspaper editor Louis Weitzenkom.
