Backfire

Bob Corey (MacRae) has spent months in an LA veterans hospital where he and Army nurse Julie Benson (Mayo) fall in love. Bob's worried when he loses contact with buddy Steve Connolly (O'Brien) and, after his release, the cops tell him that Steve is on the lam for murdering a gambler. Bob doesn't believe them and he and Julie start investigating, which leads to a series of flashbacks narrated by different characters who don't all tell the truth. MacRae successfully moved on from his musical past to this postwar crime thriller.
