Awkwardly shy Rebecca (Hall) is devoted to her ornery, bitter 91-year-old grandmother Andra (Guilbert) whose coveted New York apartment is owned by her next-door neighbors, successful vintage furniture dealers Kate (Keener) and Alex (Platt). They are not-so-subtly waiting for Andra to die so they can expand and renovate their own living quarters. A wannabe do-gooder suffering from liberal guilt, Kate invites Andra, Rebecca and her tactless, beauty-obsessed sister Mary (Peet) over for a birthday dinner and an embarrassing clash of personalities ensues, to acerbic, if somewhat wearying, effect.
