Predictable and ineptly-told romantic drama with some regrettably hammy acting from Dreyfuss. Curmudgeonly Seth Atkins (Dreyfuss) is a Cape Cod lighthouse keeper with a mysterious young assistant who calls himself John Brown (Wisdom). Both men express their disdain for the fairer sex a little too much. Then, in the summer of 1912, young artist Ruth (Gummer) moves into a nearby cottage with her companion Mrs. Bascomb (Danner) and soon the two men are not-so-reluctantly making their acquaintance. Adams also directed the similarly-themed "The Golden Boys."
