Southern belle Barbara (Vidor) and Yankee captain William Trumbell (Lowe) are introduced by her brother Arthur (Delaney) and begin a romance. The war starts and his troops occupy the hometown of the Frietchies--Trumbell is wounded and Barbara thinks he's dying so she decides to defy the Confederacy to publicly declare her love.
