Deep and rich depiction of an oppressed Russian woman who is never completely accepted into the wealthy Italian family she married into. As her husband is given control of the family's textile business, Emma (Swinson), struggles to find liberation in a culture so steeped in centuries of Italian tradition. Although looking the part of an untouchable aristocratic wife, Emma's facade begins to crack when she discovers her daughter is a lesbian. Director Guadagnino brings style to a very human melodrama without a trace of camp or irony. Brit starlet Swinson learned to speak Italian with a Russian accent for her role. English, Italian, and Russian with subtitles.
