Despite being a woman living in 4th-century Alexandria, philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer Hypatia (Weisz, who gives a dominating performance) teaches and spends her time in the city's fabled library. But the ancient pagan world is giving way to a firebrand cult of Christians who begin to dominate their Roman rulers to the detriment of such knowledge. Could use some editing with too much exposition and too many monologues slowing down the too-timely story of religious fundamentalist intolerance vs. personal freedom and reason.
