Based on a 2004 media-sensational true story. Aimless early 20-something Jeanne (Dequenne) lives with her respectable widowed mother Louise (Deneuve) in the insular Parisian suburbs. After a bad breakup with her thuggish boyfriend Franck (Duvauchelle), Jeanne suddenly pretends that she was violently attacked on a train by Arab and black youths who thought she was Jewish. The assault makes international news but Jeanne is soon forced to admit that she lied. What you never find out from the enigmatic Jeanne is why she did it. In contrast, writer/director Techine also introduces the liberal Jewish Bleistein family whose lawyer patriarch Samuel (Blanc), an old acquaintance of Louise, comes to Jeanne's aid. French and Hebrew with subtitles.
