Cynics will harp on the cliches and grouse about sappiness. Romantics will give into the beauty of Italy (and young Seyfried and mature Redgrave) and relax into the romantic corn. Young American Sophie (Seyfried) travels to Italy with her busy restauranteur fiance Victor (Garcia Bernal). Soon leaving him behind, Sophie's in Verona, Italy, the setting for Shakespeare's tragedy "Romeo and Juliet," where she joins a group of volunteers who reply to letters found in the fictional lovers' courtyard. When Sophie finds a letter from 1951, her response inspires Brit Claire (Redgrave) to travel to Italy in search of her long-lost love Lorenzo (Nero) and also gets Sophie involved in an unexpected romance with Claire's grumpy grandson Charlie (Egan).
