Well-tanned actor George Hamilton offers an affectionate memoir of his aging southern belle mother Ann (Zellweger) in Loncraine's sweetly indulgent 1950s-set family comedy. When Ann finds her husband Dan (Bacon) indulging in yet another infidelity she decides on divorce, packs ups teenaged sons George (Lerman) and Robbie (Rendall), and buys a baby blue Cadillac Eldorado convertible. The three head west, with stops along the way as Ann decides she needs a wealthy new husband but her quest increasingly frustrates George who wants some stability in his life.
