Once a semi-successful children's music performer, discontented, pot-smoking misanthrope Ben Singer (Broderick playing the ultimate mope) is now floundering in his proofreading job and as a weekend dad. He's such a hopeless downer that even his tween daughter Sandra (Ferland) is refusing his custodial visits. Ben's only friendship is with his Sengalese roommate Ibou (Williams), who falls into a diabetic coma and then becomes part of a managed medical care nightmare. Ben decides a lawsuit against the city is the way to go but that has unexpected consequences, including the arrival of Ibou's hopeful sister Khadi (Lathan) who moves in with Ben (and starts him rethinking his depressing ways) while her brother's fate is being decided.
