Whether or not the film is actually good is irrelevant (tastes obviously change) since it's a time capsule of the era's stars and popular bits. It was the first talkie showcase from MGM for a number of their previously silent stars, including comedians Laurel & Hardy and Buster Keaton, a dancing and singing Joan Crawford, and Norma Shearer and John Gilbert doing a Shakespeare spoof. There's also a big 'Singin' in the Rain' song and dance number.
