Despite being referred to as the Raccoon War, this film actually stars Tanuki--a sort of wild dog native to Japan that resembles a raccoon. The humans are encroaching upon the Tanuki's forest realm with new urban development, and they've decided to fight for their forest homes any way they can. Not necessarily a children's film despite being animated, and surprisingly lightly censored given that Disney translated it. A working knowledge of Japanese myth will also aid greatly in understanding.
