Anyone who has read a Nicholas Sparks novel (or knows what the term "Dear John letter" means) knows that this tearjerker likely won't end well. John (Tatum) is a soldier on leave who meets the vacationing Savannah (Seyfried) in the spring of 2001. They immediately fall in love, as tragic romantics are prone to do. They promise to write each other letters until they can reunite. After the 9/11 attacks, John is compelled to re-enlist over and over. Plot lines involving autism and cancer are also thrown in just in case things aren't sad enough for the viewer. Tatum and Seyfried perform well, but this is really only for those looking for a good cry.
