Amiel's melodrama about Charles Darwin focuses not on the intellectual aspects of his writing but on its spiritual and personal consequences. Set in 1858, Darwin (Bettany) has been writing for 20 years but is still hesitant to complete and publish his work, "The Origin of Species," since he's reluctant to deal with the controversy he knows it will cause. Constantly brooding over the death of his favorite child Annie, Darwin is also unwilling to further upset his devout Christian wife Emma (Connelly) while his friends encourage him to publish for the sake of science.
