In 1992, middle-aged astrophysicist Sasha Greenberg (Robards) returns to Moscow after the fall of communism and after spending 17 years in New York working for the U.S. military. He's scheduled to give the keynote address at a physics conference but his time is taken up by old friends and ex-lovers who are both happy and suspicious to see him. His mentor was/is Professor Gross (Abraham), an American defector who helped the Soviets develop nuclear weapons much as Greenberg did for the Americans. Sasha's life is depicted with numerous flashbacks while director Tsukerman overstuffs the plot as Sasha is beset by his past and present.
