Outstanding performance by newcomer Philip Johnson in the title role highlights this message movie that's based on the novel by E.R. Frank. Therapist Dr. Marie Brennan (O'Donnell) tries to help sullen 17-year-old America (Johnson), who's caught up in the overburdened foster care system. Flashbacks detail some of the abuse he's suffered while in the present America struggles to adjust to a group home.
