In 1939, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler signed a nonaggression pact that allowed both countries to destroy Polish sovereignty. In 1940, Stalin ordered the massacre of 15,000 Polish officers, who were buried in the Katyn Forest, and then officially blamed the Nazis when the mass graves were discovered. Director Wajda dispenses with sentimentality, using restraint to tell the story from various viewpoints, including that of Anna (Ostaszewska), who's searching for her husband Andrzej (Zmijewski), who's in an internment camp and destined to be killed; Jerzy (Chyra), a guilt-ridden survivor; and two sisters (Cielecka, Glinska) who take opposite stances in the postwar Soviet regime. Polish, Russian, and German with subtitles.
