With his post-college dreams of a European trip squashed by his dad's financial problems, James (Eisenberg) instead must move back home to Pennsylvania in the summer of 1987 and with his limited degree can only find work at the "Adventureland," the ragged local amusement park. Still a virgin, James encounters Em (Stewart), a sexually-experienced though troubled young woman who can't stand her stepmother and is having an affair with the park's married handyman (Reynolds). The pair genuinely connect, in large part to the actors, particularly Stewart. Yes, it's a coming-of-age comedy and has the usual sophomoric jokes, vulgarity, and drug use but they are just background to a charming love story. Based in part on writer-director Mottola's own life, also features a great '80s soundtrack and a fun pairing of SNLers Wiig and Hader as the park's married owners.
This was a great movie for what it was worth. I would not go out and buy it, but it's a good mindless movie to rent when you're not in the mood to think.
