Director Nakagawa has been considered the father of the modern Japanese horror film, and this is among his last works. Chobei (Seizaburo kawazu) is a brutal, oppressive landlord who murders a peasant farmer and forces his wife and daughter to become his personal servants. He kills a snake that his victim's wife had been protecting, and begins to lose his grip on sanity as he begins experiencing horrible hallucinations. He also believes that his son's beautiful new bride reminds him disturbingly of the dead snake.
