Third version of the Hemingway novel, set during WWI, was designed as a vehicle for faded star Jones, wife of producer David O. Selznick. But she was too old for the part of the innocent young nurse who gets pregnant by ambulance driver Hudson (equally unconvincing). Selznick's interference with the script didn't help either (he actually wrote a letter of apology to Hemingway). The overblown production was a boxoffice bomb.
