New York subway dispatcher Walter Garber's (Washington) shift isn't starting well after a subway train is hijacked by homicidal nutjob Ryder (Travolta) and his armed crew. They threaten to execute passengers one-by-one until a large ransom is paid, but how exactly do they then plan to escape? Remake of the 1974 thriller (that starred Walter Matthau and Robert Shaw) is filled with Scott's swooping, fast-paced images; Washington's workmanlike, compromised, reluctant hero; Travolta's over-the-top, tattooed baddie; and a visually interesting comparison of a post 9/11 Big Apple vs. the grungy city of the 1970s.
