Firefighter Caleb (Cameron) has let his obsession with work get in the way of his marriage to neglected spouse Catherine (Bethea) and they have separated. Caleb's dad (Malcom) urges him to attempt a reconciliation by trying a Christian-based 40-day marriage program but it won't be easy. Commendable and sincere effort that gets a little heavy-handed in its last act.
Despite the fact that Fireproof has a strong central message, it's full of melodrama. The beginning was horrible; the acting was so dreadfully wooden and the script so poor that I almost left the theater. Luckily, the movie gets better as it goes on. That's not saying much, though. Sure, it's got some intense moments, and sure it's got some emotional moments, but overall it's just another Christian movie with a good message that is hidden behind a distractingly mediocre movie.
