A rookie cop is murdered but comes back to life as The Spirit (Macht), an immortal crime-fighting sort of superhero, who (naturally) is stalked by an obligatory nemesis, The Octopus (Jackson). The so-called story is drawn from Will Eisner's comic book series though unfortunately none of his ironic wit makes it to the screen. Toss in a couple of poorly named vixens that alternate between lover and assailant and, well, there you have it. The essential lesson here is that not every graphic novel can become a worthwhile feature film, even with eye candy like Mendes and Johansson. If you can't pass on style over substance or off-the-chart camp, go ahead and indulge in this guilty pleasure, but don't say The Hound didn't warn you.
