Young, attractive New Yorkers Frank Wheeler (DiCaprio) and April (Winslet) meet at a Manhattan party, both certain they'll lead lives filled with excitement. Seven years and two kids later, the Wheelers are entrenched in suburban Connecticut leading a typical 1950's suburban life. The oppression eventually leads them to infidelity and a combative relationship. Pressed to the breaking point, Frank agrees to April's plan to flee to Paris to find themselves and their abandoned dreams. But John (Shannon), the mentally ill son of the Wheeler's neighbor (Bates), exposes their failure to address the self-loathing at the root of their problems. Based on Richard Yates' novel of the same title, the film captures the buttoned-up look and feel of mid-1950s America though bypassing the nostalgia.
