Rachel Getting Married

Rachel (DeWitt) is indeed getting married, but here comes the bride's junkie sister Kym (Hathaway), attending the wedding after her umpteenth rehab stint. The impending nuptials force a reluctant reunion of a family fragmented by the weight of accumulated self-inflicted wounds but held together by a desire to belong. Kym's habit of hogging a spotlight that should finally be on Rachel anchors the sibs' caustic relationship, which is further eroded by father Paul (Irwin) and his second wife (Winger). That this feels so real is the result of an ensemble cast delivering their best work, while director Demme's documentary-like approach provides an at times uncomfortable intimacy.
