An entire city's population is suddenly struck blind, degraded to lost souls wandering the streets, filthy, ruined, and dying. The only ones not affected by the epidemic are the inmates quarantined at prison, who descend into sheer madness from hunger, and an oppressive leader (Bernal) who wields a gun and newly-discovered sense of dictatorship. Much to her confusion, the local eye doctor's wife (Moore) also retains her vision, as well as her sense of order. The relentless allegorical suffering and way-too-artsy effects make it almost impossible to lay off the fast-forward button. Adapted from the novel by Jose Saramago.
