After wrapping up their Christian-based work in China, married Americans Roy (Harrelson) and Jessie (a dynamic Mortimer) embark on a week-long train ride from Beijing to Moscow, where they are joined by Spaniard Carlos (Noriega) and his younger American girlfriend Abby (Mara). The chance encounter proves disastrous after Roy is separated from the group and Carlos' pursuit of the once-troubled Jessie--unnoticed by the naive Roy--takes a tragic turn that leaves Jessie the unknowing possessor of illegal drugs.
