It's between the world wars in England, and middle-class Charles Ryder (Goode) is enamored by the snooty lifestyle of brother and sister Sebastian (Whishaw) and Julia (Atwell) at their Brideshead estate, where they live with their mother, the devout Catholic Lady Marchmain (Thompson). At first, Charles hooks up with the boozy Sebastian but later turns his amorous attention to Julia, fueling Sebastian's jealously and Lady Marchmain's ire. Despite the lush backdrop and Thompson's icy turn, it falls short of the acclaimed 1981 British miniseries version. Adapted from the 1945 novel by Evelyn Waugh.
