The screenwriters use Prosper Merimee's original 1845 novel rather than George Bizet's 1875 opera, although the plot is certainly familiar. Sultry gypsy Carmen (Vega) toys with the affections of military officer Jose (Sbaraglia) until his obsession leads to disgrace, murder, and execution. This version is told by Jose to Prospero (Benedict) in flashbacks. Vega is a looker (and not shy about disrobing) but she doesn't have a lot of chemistry with the various actors in the lurid story.
