Disappointing adaptation of McMurtry's 1997 novel, which falls second in terms of "The Lonesome Dove" timeframe, set mostly in the 1850s. Best friends Gus (Zahn) and Call (Urban) are Texas Rangers hunting Comanches, including leader Buffalo Hump (Studi). When their eccentric captain, Inish Scully (Kilmer), goes after a horse thief, they are left in charge. Kilmer spends a lot of time stuck in a pit and going crazy after Inish is captured by a Mexican bandito (Lopez). Back in town, Gus pines for Clara (Cardellini) while Call struggles with his feelings for Maggie (Banks), and Inish's wife Inez (Griffiths) spreads her charms amongst the Rangers. Oh yeah, and the Comanches attack. Disjointed storyline, stilted dialogue, and poor (miscast) performances doom this effort.
