Set in 1949 and steeped in the style, mood, and sensibilities of the time, this is the story of Harry Allen (Cooper), a buttoned-down married man who falls in love with young and gorgeous widow Kay (McAdams). Burdened with guilt and hoping for understanding, Harry confides in his womanizing pal Richard (Brosnan), who then becomes fascinated with Kay, too. Harry's marriage to Pat (Clarkson) is functional if not entirely satisfying and Pat appears to know nothing of the affair. Harry decides to end his marriage but is so duty bound to Pat that he plans to murder her rather than subject her to the pain of a divorce (hmm, wonder if that's the option she'd pick). Several big surprises hold together this intriguing, smart drama.
