Sayles rarely is predictable, but this time the showbiz story seems all too familiar. In rural 1950s Alabama, Tyrone Purvis (Glover) is going to lose his debt-ridden roadhouse, the Honeydripper, unless he can come up with a surefire way to make money. He decides to advertise that local legend Guitar Sam will appear on Saturday night, though he hasn't actually booked the performer. Riding the rails into town to save the day is young blues upstart Sonny Blake (Clark), who brings along his solid wood-body electric guitar.
