Writer Margot (Kidman) returns to her family's home for her sister Pauline's (Leigh) wedding to "artist" Malcolm (Black), but years of contempt, ego, and neuroses boil over among the sisters, their children, and anyone else who happens to be around. Writer/director Baumbach specializes in finding biting humor and poignancy in the struggles of flawed, overly educated East Coasters, but the nasty, petty characters he's created here are so hard to relate to that anything funny or moving is buried under an avalanche of meanness.
