What could be worse than a miserable life? A miserable afterlife, that's what. Croatian director Goran Dukic takes a stark and quirky peek at the limbo that exists between the two. Zia (Fugit) is dumped by girlfriend Desiree (Bibb) and decides to end it all, hoping for relief from his misery. But he finds himself stuck in an afterlife that is marginally like the one he just left, only duller, and with worse jobs. A cast of kooky characters who have also offed themselves shares the limbo world, two of which are wild Russian rocker Eugene (Whigham) and derelict clown Kneller (an aptly-cast Waits). Zia cheers up just a bit when he finds out that Desiree followed his lead and he goes on a roadtrip to find her, but ends up falling for Mikal (Sossamon), who swears she's there by mistake and is trying to get home.
