Boring historical drama strives for epic romance but lacks appealing characters, convincing plot, or any chemistry between its leads. Herve (Pitt) leaves his wife Helene (Knightley) and their 19th-century French village for Japan to obtain silkworms for his boss (Molina), but ends up falling for a concubine (Ashina) of the warlord who provides the silkworms (Yakusho). Movie skips anything interesting about the historical period in which it's set and opts for tired cliches about love and fate while failing to build any dramatic tension.
