Fictionalized account of the life of Spanish painter Francisco Goya (Skarsgard), who lived and worked during the Inquisition. Straddling the eras of courtiers and modernists, Goya navigates the brutality and religious politics of his time. One of Goya's subjects, Ines Bibatua (Portman), is jailed under suspicion that she is Jewish. He must also take commissions from church officials, giving him a glimpse of the unholy and inhumane treatment handed out by the inquisitor and his minions. A well-crafted costume drama; lovely but light on script.
