Indie pop culture gods Tarantino and Rodriguez create a double-feature tribute to their favorite exploitation movies of the 1970s (complete with ironic fake coming attractions). Surprisingly, Rodriguez's "Planet Terror," about small-town residents fighting a zombie horde, is far and away the better of the two. It's faster, funnier, and much more of a tribute to the grindhouse genre. Tarantino's "Death Proof," a muscle-car slasher film starring Kurt Russell, is unbelievably tedious, with the director basically indulging in all of his creepiest fetishes (feet, cheerleaders, etc). Granted, it ends with one of the most amazing car chases ever set to film, but the preceding 80 minutes are so boring, you may not be awake to see it.
