A washed-up and self-destructive former Hollywood star (Davis, who allegedly took the role to lampoon rival Joan Crawford) gets, and blows, one last chance at a comeback and finds love with a former protege (Hayden) who gave up stardom for the simple life. To the chagrin of both him and her daughter (Wood), she can't quite give up the siren song of her past glory and continues to sabotage what could be a happy life. Gut-wrenching and squirmy for the scenes in which Davis's character, for which she received an Oscar nomination, debases herself personally and professionally.
