A cultural-clash family comedy. A red door is supposed to mean good luck in Chinese culture but it doesn't seem to be working for the Chinese-American Wong family. Dad Ed (Ma) is in a suicidal funk since his retirement, wondering what happened to the three little girls he and his wife (Shen) raised, since they are so absorbed in their own lives and seem oblivious to his pain. Ed suddenly decides to immure himself in a monastery and then the family really gets crazy.
