The comedy comes from the self-important behavior of the characters. Huppert grimaces her way through her seventh collaboration with Chabrol, playing zealous, incorruptible examining magistrate Jeanne Charmant-Killman. She's looking into a corporate embezzlement scandal (based on a true incident) that has serious political implications for the government. Meanwhile, her neglected hubby, Philippe (Renucci), becomes even more unhappy when the case brings Jeanne a lot of attention. But she's breaking unspoken social codes among what is still a very male-dominated world. French with subtitles.
