Disappointing, gimmicky, and generally incoherent effort stars Carrey as dog catcher Walter Sparrow, who's given a mystery novel by wife Agatha (Madsen in another supportive wife role). It's about a noirish detective (also played by Carrey), and all the significant events in the book are oddly connected to the number 23. Walter also becomes obsessive about the number and begins to fear that he will follow the book's plot, which includes murder. Walter eventually gets a grip but the film never recovers.
